The authority of perfection
Is the Word of God the final authority in our lives? Starting with that premise, most Protestant testimonies make perfect sense. Protestants commonly accuse Catholics of not using scripture as the sole and final authority. This accusation us unneccesary since Catholics never claim such. Nothing about Catholic theology contradicts the Word of God and what are called additions are only documented forms of what every Protestant denomination does in their individual churches - it is their spin on the gray areas which the Bible doesn't specifically address. From this perspective, the Catholic Church is at least no worse than a sect, and it is certainly not a cult.
It is dishonest to claim that scripture is the final and sole authority in the Protestant Church. If it was there would not be so many denominations and so many versions of the "truth" tolerated. Jesus gave power to the Apostles to bind and to loose - where is that power today? Is it in every pastor, elder and deacon in all 50+ Protestant churches in a given town, each leading his small group through God's will while clearly opposed to the leading of other churches claiming the same authority from God? To claim that this is what God intended for his church makes a fool of God. He is not the author of the confusion we see around us.
Neither side wins points in the perfection category. As has often been said: as long as there are people involved, any system will be imperfect regardless of the integrity of its ideals.
