A revolving magisterium
There is in some ways a Protestant magisterium, one that does not claim divine appointment and whose members are added and deleted according to the mental assent or opposition of each individual's intellect with the teachings. Why so little unity? Each person is free to choose what to believe with complete disregard for maturity or soundness of reason. Why so many herisies? Each new "revelation" by claim has the same source; "God told me...", "I felt the Holy Spirit telling me..." are phrases not uncommonly heard in some Protestant denominations. That is not to say that God does not speak to individuals but the consistency with which he seems to speak to some and not to others is a bit alarming.
God speaks to us through his Word, through the Church, and by the wisdom passed down to us through generations. In rare cases He speaks directly to someone, but at this stage of the game if He's telling you something "new" (not personally new, but theologically new), then chances are it is not Him but rather someone posing as Him.
